Stories of a German Exchange Student

Delta X Competition

This week, from Monday to Thursday, everything was quite normal. A small exception was the meeting at the kindergarten on Monday, because it was the so called “teacher’s day” on Friday. On Thursday I went again to Järva-Jaani for volleyball training and stayed there overnight.

On Friday there were two things that made up my day: Firstly, it was teachers’ day, which means that all the teachers are off and the students in the upper classes do their work instead. On top of the school, we are also doing this in kindergarten. Because I was in kindergarten I didn’t really understand what was going on in school, but in the morning we were introduced to our groups and then the real teachers left the rooms and we looked after the children during the morning. At lunchtime the teachers came back and we were free. I expected the school to be just a few students giving lessons, but in fact there was not a single teacher in the school, the reception, the secretariat and the headmaster’s office were manned by students. Later I found out that the teachers were attending an event in another city. Even though I didn’t expect it, the experience was very cool. After that I went to Lahu with the robotics team and had a lot of fun. This place really just makes me happy. My mum wanted me to be home at 5.30pm for my birthday. In the morning Selma’s family already made me pancakes and now, although I said it wasn’t that important to me, my family invited some friends and we spent the evening together.

On Saturday I went to Tartu for the Delta X event with the robotics team. We drove to Tartu University in the morning. The picture you can see is in front of the room we developed in. The idea was to build a robot that could play football. It wasn’t mainly a competition, but an event to develop together and benefit from other teams’ ideas. It was really fun, even though we weren’t able to build an efficient working robot in one day. There was just not enough time. After that I stayed at a friend’s house in Tartu, because I was invited to a school party of one of the oldest schools in Tartu. It was a bit awkward because, although I can’t say for sure, I didn’t meet anyone else who didn’t go to that school. However, I didn’t feel excluded. For this school this party was also the welcome party for the 10th graders, if i understood it right. So each 10th class had to do a dance, then they had to pray to the 12th graders and some other fun stuff. For an old wooden house, this place was quite similar to a normal party place. The lighting and sound design was better than expected. After this long night, some of the girls came back to the flat I was staying in for the night, so it got even longer. After spending the Sunday just with relaxing now I’m sitting in the train on the way back home.
